How to play math crossword
A math crossword (also called crossmath) is a grid of small sums that cross each other, like the words in a crossword. Each sum reads across from left to right or down from top to bottom, for example 6 + 3 = 9.
Fill the blanks
Some squares are blank. Under the board is a pool with exactly the numbers that are missing. Put each number in a blank so that every sum across and down is right. Where two sums cross, the shared square must work for both of them.
Simple rules
- Each square holds one whole number, which can have more than one digit, like 12 or 48.
- Every sum has one sign: plus, minus, times or divided by. Division always comes out even.
- Every puzzle has exactly one answer, so you can always work it out without guessing.
Tips
- Start with sums that have only one blank: they tell you the number straight away.
- A crossing square must fit two sums at once, which often narrows it down to one choice.
- Cross numbers off the pool in your head as you place them; the last few often fit only one way.
